Intracranial arterial anatomy is lacking for most mammalian and non-mammalian model species, especially concerning the origin of the basilar artery (BA). Enhancing the knowledge of this anatomy can improve animal models and help understanding anatomical variations in humans. We have studied encephalic arteries in three different species of birds and eight different species of mammals using formalin-fixed brains injected with arterial red latex. Our results and literature analysis indicate that, for all vertebrates, the internal carotid artery (ICA) supplies the brain and divides into two branches: a cranial and a caudal branch. The difference between vertebrates lies in the caudal branch of the ICA. For non-mammalian, the caudal branch is the origin of the BA, and the vertebral artery (VA) is not involved in brain supply. For mammals, the VA supplies encephalic arteries in two different ways. In the first type of organization, mostly found in ungulates, the carotid rete mirabile supplies the encephalic arteries, the caudal branch is the origin of the BA, and the VA is indirectly involved in carotid rete mirabile blood supply. The second type of encephalic artery organization for mammals is the same as in humans. The caudal branch of the ICA serves as the posterior communicating artery, and the BA originates from both VAs. We believe that knowledge of comparative anatomy of encephalic arteries contributes to a better understanding of animal models applicable to surgical or radiological techniques. It improves the understanding of rare encephalic variations that may be present in humans.

The anatomy and organisation of the endocrine pancreas in ray-finned fishes vary widely. The two main morphoanatomical character states are diffuse versus compact pancreatic tissue. The latter are called Brockmann Bodies (BBs), or principal islets. The present study is the first comprehensive survey on the anatomy of the endocrine pancreas (diffuse versus compact) across 322 actinopterygian species in 39 orders and 135 families based on literature, specimen dissections, and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). The data obtained show that large endocrine pancreatic islets (BB) have appeared several times in teleost evolution: in some ostariophysian clades and within the Salmoniformes and Neoteleostei. Acanthomorpha (spiny-rayed fishes) is the largest clade of the Neoteleostei. Within this clade, an absence of BBs is only observed in flying fishes (Exocoetidae), parrotfishes (Scarinae), and some of the scarine relatives, the Labridae. The presence of BBs in examined jellynose fish species from the Ateleopodiformes indicates support for its sister-group relationship to the Ctenosquamata (Myctophiformes + Acanthomorpha). More investigations are still needed to corroborate the presence or absence of BBs as a putative synapomorphy for a clade comprising Ateleopodiformes and Ctenosquamata.

Geometric morphometrics can effectively distinguish isolated third lower molars of present-day sheep and goat, but its applicability to archaeological specimens has yet to be established. Using a modern reference collection of 743 sheep and goats and a two-dimensional landmark-based geometric morphometric (GMM) protocol, this study aimed to morphometrically identify 109 archaeological specimens, used as case studies, dating from the Late Neolithic to the modern period/era. These morphometric identifications were then compared to molecular identifications via collagen peptide mass fingerprinting, known as Zooarcheology by Mass Spectrometry (ZooMS). ZooMS confirmed the morphometric identifications for 104 specimens, with the five misidentified specimens all morphometrically identified as goat. Modern sheep and goats have larger teeth and distinct shapes compared to their archaeological counterparts, suggesting strong differences between archaeological and modern specimens potentially linked with recent breed improvement or geographical origin of the specimens. In addition, for both species, some of the archaeological dental morphologies do not match with any of our modern references. This study validates the applicability of geometric morphometrics for identifying isolated archaeological sheep and goat teeth. It represents a stepping stone for future, non-destructive, bioarchaeological studies of the two species.

Dogs are among the most variable species today, but little is known about the morphological variability in the early phases of their history. The Neolithic transition to farming may have resulted in an early morphological diversification as a result of changes in the anthropic environment or intentional selection on specific morphologies. Here, we describe the variability and modularity in mandible form by comparing 525 dog mandibles from European archaeological sites ranging from 8100 to 3000 cal. BC to a reference sample of modern dogs, wolves, and dingoes. We use three-dimensional geometric morphometrics to quantify the form of complete and fragmented mandibles. We demonstrate that an important morphological variability already existed before the Bronze Age in Europe, yet the largest, smallest, most brachycephalic or dolichocephalic extant dogs have no equivalent in the archaeological sample, resulting in a lower variation compared to modern relatives. The covariation between the anterior and posterior parts of the mandible is lower in archaeological dogs, suggesting a low degree of intentional human selection in early periods. The mandible of modern and ancient dogs differs in functionally important areas, possibly reflecting differences in diet, competition, or the implication of ancient dogs in hunting or defence.

The potential of artificial selection to dramatically impact phenotypic diversity is well known. Large-scale morphological changes in domestic species, emerging over short timescales, offer an accelerated perspective on evolutionary processes. The domestic horse (Equus caballus) provides a striking example of rapid evolution, with major changes in morphology and size likely stemming from artificial selection. However, the microevolutionary mechanisms allowing to generate this variation in a short time interval remain little known. Here, we use 3D geometric morphometrics to quantify skull morphological diversity in the horse, and investigate modularity and integration patterns to understand how morphological associations contribute to cranial evolvability in this taxon. We find that changes in the magnitude of cranial integration contribute to the diversification of the skull morphology in horse breeds. Our results demonstrate that a conserved pattern of modularity does not constrain large-scale morphological variations in horses and that artificial selection has impacted mechanisms underlying phenotypic diversity to facilitate rapid shape changes. More broadly, this study demonstrates that studying microevolutionary processes in domestic species produces important insights into extant phenotypic diversity.

The jaw system in canids is essential for defence and prey acquisition. However, how it varies in wild species in comparison with domestic species remains poorly understood, yet is of interest in terms of understanding the impact of artificial selection. Here, we explored the variability and interrelationships between the upper and lower jaws, muscle architecture and bite force in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes). We performed dissections and used 3D geometric morphometric approaches to quantify jaw shape in 68 foxes. We used a static lever model and bite force estimates were compared with in vivo measurements of 10 silver foxes. Our results show strong relationships exist between cranial and mandible shape, and between cranial or mandible shape on the one hand and muscles or estimated bite force on the other hand, confirming the strong integration of the bony and muscular components of the jaw system. These strong relationships are strongly driven by size. The functional links between shape and estimated bite force are stronger for the mandible, which probably reflects its greater specialisation towards biting. We then compared our results with data previously obtained for dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) to investigate the effect of domestication. Foxes and dogs differ in skull shape and muscle physiological cross-sectional area (PCSA). They show a similar amount of morphological variation in muscle PCSA, but foxes show lower variation in cranial and mandible shape. Interestingly, the patterns of covariation are not stronger in foxes than in dogs, suggesting that domestication did not lead to a disruption of the functional links of the jaw system.

In the course of evolution, pecorans (i.e., higher ruminants) developed a remarkable diversity of osseous cranial appendages, collectively referred to as "headgear," which likely share the same origin and genetic basis. However, the nature and function of the genetic determinants underlying their number and position remain elusive. Jacob and other rare populations of sheep and goats are characterized by polyceraty, the presence of more than two horns. Here, we characterize distinct POLYCERATE alleles in each species, both associated with defective HOXD1 function. We show that haploinsufficiency at this locus results in the splitting of horn bud primordia, likely following the abnormal extension of an initial morphogenetic field. These results highlight the key role played by this gene in headgear patterning and illustrate the evolutionary co-option of a gene involved in the early development of bilateria to properly fix the position and number of these distinctive organs of Bovidae.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a contrast medium distribution pattern after peribulbar injection in cadavers. STUDY DESIGN: A cadaveric study. ANIMALS: A group of eight male dogs and four canine cadaver heads. METHODS: In phase 1, ultrasound-guided peribulbar injections (1.0 mL dye) were performed in four orbits using a subzygomatic approach. After dissection, the procedure was considered successful if 1) no dye was found in the retrobulbar space, 2) the peribulbar compartment was stained and 3) the dye reached the orbital fissure. In phase 2, using 16 orbits, the same technique was used to inject 0.1 mL kg-1 contrast medium into (group A, n = 8) or outside (group B, n = 8) the peribulbar compartment. After freezing at -20°C, orbits were imaged using computed tomography, and the contrast medium distribution was analysed. RESULTS: In phase 1, the procedure was successful in all four eyes. In phase 2, two orbits (one in each group) were removed from the study: one was not injected and the other was injected twice. The contrast medium was found inside the peribulbar compartment in six of seven (85.7%) group A orbits and two of seven (28.6%) group B orbits. In all of these cases, distribution to the orbital fissure, rostral alar foramen, mandibular foramen and inside the skull was observed. The oval foramen was reached in three of seven (42.9%) group A orbits and one of seven (14.3%) group B orbits. In one/seven (14.3%) group A orbits and five/seven (71.4%) group B orbits, the contrast medium was found inside the masseter and temporal muscles, and no distribution towards the aforementioned structures was observed. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Ultrasound-guided peribulbar injection of 0.1 mL kg-1 contrast medium in canine cadavers can lead to an extensive distribution of the injectate that reaches the orbital fissure, the rostral alar, oval, and mandibular foramina and can be found intra-cranially.

Previous studies based on two-dimensional methods have suggested that the great morphological variability of cranial shape in domestic dogs has impacted bite performance. Here, we used a three-dimensional biomechanical model based on dissection data to estimate the bite force of 47 dogs of various breeds at several bite points and gape angles. In vivo bite force for three Belgian shepherd dogs was used to validate our model. We then used three-dimensional geometric morphometrics to investigate the drivers of bite force variation and to describe the relationships between the overall shape of the jaws and bite force. The model output shows that bite force is rather variable in dogs and that dogs bite harder on the molar teeth and at lower gape angles. Half of the bite force is determined by the temporal muscle. Bite force also increased with size, and brachycephalic dogs showed higher bite forces for their size than mesocephalic dogs. We obtained significant covariation between the shape of the upper or lower jaw and absolute or residual bite force. Our results demonstrate that domestication has not resulted in a disruption of the functional links in the jaw system in dogs and that mandible shape is a good predictor of bite force.

BACKGROUND: Hybridization has been widely practiced in plant and animal breeding as a means to enhance the quality and fitness of the organisms. In domestic equids, this hybrid vigor takes the form of improved physical and physiological characteristics, notably for strength or endurance. Because the offspring of horse and donkey is generally sterile, this widely recognized vigor is expressed in the first generation (F1). However, in the absence of recombination between the two parental genomes, F1 hybrids can be expected to be phenotypically intermediate between their parents which could potentially restrict the possibilities of an increase in overall fitness. In this study, we examine the morphology of the main limb bones of domestic horses, donkeys and their hybrids to investigate the phenotypic impact of hybridization on the locomotor system. We explore bone shape variation and covariation to gain insights into the morphological and functional expressions of the hybrid vigor commonly described in domestic equids. RESULTS: Our data reveal the occurrence of transgressive effects on several bones in the F1 generation. The patterns of morphological integration further demonstrate that the developmental processes producing covariation are not disrupted by hybridization, contrary to functional ones. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that an increase in overall fitness could be related to more flexibility in shape change in hybrids, except for the main forelimb long bones of which the morphology is strongly driven by muscle interactions. More broadly, this study illustrates the interest of investigating not only bone shape variation but also underlying processes, in order to contribute to better understanding how developmental and functional mechanisms are affected by hybridization.

Archaeozoology provides bones, which quite regularly present traces of fractures. These fractures are more or less at an advanced level of healing and bear witness to traumas or pathologies. These cases of palaeopathology are not always the subject of publications, which further restricts our knowledge about them. This short note allows the scientific community to be aware of an original case from an archaeological context in Jordan of a fracture on a hen's femur, consolidated by a callus and with displacement of the distal ends. Beyond the "anecdotal" aspect, and without imagining the circumstances in which the fracture occurred, the animal survived.

The relationships between the different component parts of organisms, such as the sharing of common development or function, produce a coordinated variation between the different traits. This morphological integration contributes to drive or constrain morphological variation and thus impacts phenotypic diversification. Artificial selection is known to contribute significantly to phenotypic diversification of domestic species. However, little attention has been paid to its potential impact on integration patterns. This study explores the patterns of integration in the limb bones of different horse breeds, using 3D geometric morphometrics. The domestic horse is known to have been strongly impacted by artificial selection, and was often selected for functional traits. Our results confirm that morphological integration among bones within the same limb is strong and apparently partly produced by functional factors. Most importantly, they reveal that artificial selection, which led to the diversification of domestic horses, impacts covariation patterns. The influence of selection on the patterns of covariation varies along the limbs and modulates bone shape, likely due to a differential ligament or muscle development. These results highlight that, in addition to not being constrained by a strong morphological integration, artificial selection has modulated the covariation patterns according to the locomotor specificities of the breeds. More broadly, it illustrates the interest in studying how micro-evolutionary processes impact covariation patterns and consequently contribute to morphological diversification of domestic species.

Muscle and bone masses are highly correlated and muscles impose large loads on bone. Muscle wasting that accompanies bone loss has been poorly investigated. 21 female mice were spread into seven groups. At day 0, 18 mice received Botulinum toxin (BTX) injection in the quadriceps muscle to induce paralysis of the right hind limb; the left contralateral side was used as control. Mice were sacrificed at 7, 14, 21, 28, 56 and 90 days post-injection. A remaining group was sacrificed at day 0. Trabecular bone volume was determined by microcomputed tomography (microCT) at the distal femur and tibia proximal metaphyses on both sides. Limbs were immersed in an HgCl2 solution allowing muscle visualization by microCT. On 2D sections, the cross-sectional areas and form-factors were measured for the quadriceps at mid-thigh and gastrocnemius at mid-leg and these muscles were dissected and weighed. Bone volume decreased in the paralysed side. Bone loss was maximal at 56 days followed by recuperation at 90 days. The cross-sectional areas of gastrocnemius and quadriceps were significantly lower in the paralysed limb from 7 days; the decrease was maximum at 21 days for the gastrocnemius and 28 days for the quadriceps. No difference in form-factors was found between the two limbs. Similar results were obtained with the anatomical method and significant correlations were obtained between the two methods. Quantitative analysis of muscle loss and recovery was possible by microCT after using a metallic contrast agent. Loss of bone secondary to muscle wastage induced by BTX and recovery showed a parallel evolution for bone and muscles.

Organisms are organized into suites of anatomical structures that typically covary when developmentally or functionally related, and this morphological integration plays a determinant role in evolutionary processes. Artificial selection on domestic species causes strong morphological changes over short time spans, frequently resulting in a wide and exaggerated phenotypic diversity. This raises the question of whether integration constrains the morphological diversification of domestic species and how natural and artificial selection may impact integration patterns. Here, we study the morphological integration in the appendicular skeleton of domestic horses and donkeys, using three-dimensional geometric morphometrics on 75 skeletons. Our results indicate that a strong integration is inherited from developmental mechanisms which interact with functional factors. This strong integration reveals a specialization in the locomotion of domestic equids, partly for running abilities. We show that the integration is stronger in horses than in donkeys, probably because of a greater degree of specialization and predictability of their locomotion. Thus, the constraints imposed by integration are weak enough to allow important morphological changes and the phenotypic diversification of domestic species.

Paleopathological information observed in cats (Felis catus, L. 1758) is rarely described in zooarcheological assemblages. This article is intended to present different bone diseases (infections, degenerative and traumatic lesions) affecting several bones (i.e. femur, hip bone, skull, etc.) of at least two cats from the medieval harbor site of Qalhât (Oman) and to inform us about the health status of these felines.

Twenty bitches were seen in consultation at the Department of Reproduction at ONIRIS (College of Veterinary Medicine, Food Science and Engineering, Loire Atlantique, Nantes, France) between 25 and 50 days of gestation for early sex determination of the canine foetus using ultrasound. The genital tubercle is not visible before 26 days; between 26 and 30 days, it is visible between the pelvic limbs; between 33 and 50 days, the position of the genital tubercle enables sex determination as it migrates caudally in the female and cranially in the male. Good statistical concordance between sexing via ultrasound and sexing at birth has been established (kappa coefficient of 0.8). Macroscopic, microscopic, and histological examinations of the external genital organs were also performed on 10 foetuses at 35 days of gestation; a cartilaginous structure was visualized in the genital apparatus of the male but also in half of the females. Finally, the development of a PCR technique on the SRY gene using formaldehyde-preserved tissues has been described for the first time in this study. It served as a reference for sexing canine foetuses.

The anatomy of the gas bladder of Diodontidae (porcupinefishes) and Tetraodontidae (pufferfishes) was studied on the basis of dissections and magnetic resonance imaging. Among the examined taxa of Tetraodontiformes, only puffers and porcupinefishes possess a thick walled and dorsally U-shaped or crescent-moon-shaped gas bladder. In the tetraodontid genus Lagocephalus the gas bladder is reduced to a rudiment. The species belonging to the genera Canthigaster, Arothron, and some species of Tetraodon differ in the positioning of their crescent-moon-shaped gas bladder. These observations confirm the close relationship of: (i) Diodontidae and Tetraodontidae and (ii) Canthigaster, Arothron, and some species of Tetraodon. The heterogeneity of the genus Tetraodon is supported by the gas bladder morphology, as previously suggested by molecular studies.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations for anatomical studies on collection specimens are becoming more and more frequent. As the presence of metallic objects within the specimens can disturb the acquisition of images and damage both specimens and materials, a simple protocol using radiographs is here proposed to detect these objects in collection specimens before conducting an MRI examination.

RESUMO

The purpose of this work is to examine the gross visceral anatomy of ocean sunfish and angler using non-invasive imaging techniques: computed tomography imaging (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Similarities and differences in the internal organisation of these two species are verified. Both species lack a swimbladder and present a significant asymmetry in the hepatic lobes, an elongated bile duct terminating close to the stomach, a compact thyroid embedded in a blood lacuna, and very reduced brain and spinal cord. These observations are important in regard to the close relationships between Tetraodontiformes and Lophiiformes, established by several molecular works, but not yet confirmed by morpho-anatomical data. However the occurrence of these features has to be examined in other taxa before phylogenetic hypotheses are proposed.

RESUMO

This study, based on a sample of 215 individuals, gives detailed insight into Sheep metapodial bone main features: their variability and correlations between their various parts. This data allowed us to reveal the most relevant measurements for study of metapodial bones in sheep (GL, Bp, Dp, SD, DD, Bd, and Dd), as well as references used to split up the main population. Those references give a great help in placing any sample in relation to the breeds described in this work. The main purpose of this tool is to compare unknown populations, such as fossil ones, to present sheep breeds, in order to increase our knowledge of domesticated Sheep History, from its origins to the present day.
